Shotgun answers, with receipts.
Tactical Shotguns is an independent buying guide for home-defense, duty-style and competition shotguns — plus the federal and state law you need to know before you buy one.

How we work
- Specs come from the maker. Barrel length, capacity, weight and list price are taken from each manufacturer's own product page, with the link on every model page.
- Law comes from the law. State summaries cite the statute or an official state source where we could find one. When we lean on a secondary summary, we say so.
- We say "unknown" when we don't know. If a maker doesn't publish a number, we leave it blank instead of guessing.
- Every page shows a "last checked" date. Laws and product lines change. If something is out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
What we don't do
- We don't publish hands-on review scores or claim range time we didn't do. Our recommendations are based on published specs, features, fit and price.
- We don't sell rankings. Retailers can't pay to move a shotgun up a list.
- We don't publish how-to content for illegal modifications. The SBS & NFA guide covers the legal paperwork route only.
How the site is paid for
Some "check price" links are affiliate links to gun retailers and Amazon. If you buy through one, the site may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes what we recommend. Full details are on the terms & disclosures page.
Not legal advice
This site explains the law in plain English. It is not a lawyer. Before you buy, build, register or travel with a shotgun, confirm the current rules with your state and the ATF.
